The purpose of this study is to better understand the nature and prevalence of race/ethnicity/religion-based hate crimes and hate speech and their effects on victims and the community. The objectives of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada funded project are to (1) Document local experiences of race/ethnicity/religion-based hate crime and hate speech to identify the perceived impact these crimes have on the victims and their ethnic communities; (2) Uncover the barriers and facilitators victims eperience when deciding to, or not to, report race-based hate crime and hate speech; (3) Identify ways that the city can effectively support and advocate for these community members to foster a sense of social inclusion and community belonging; and (4) Increase community understanding of, and empathy for, local experiences of race-based hate crime and hate speech.

This research project is in partnership with the City of Brantford. This project is supported in part by funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council.
